Getting ready for Põõsaspea for a month and a half, I was mentally prepared for a period of isolation from society and a decline in social skills. However, it soon became clear that in addition to being a concentration spot for bird migration, there is also an important concentration of human migration at the cape, with analogous relations to the weather. So far, we have encountered individuals from various parts of Estonia as well as from Germany, UK, France, Finland, Latvia, and beyond. The rarest individuals were from the USA, who arrived after strong westerly winds. After nearly a week of southerly winds, a cyclist from West Africa (of Los Angeles origin), who resembled John Lennon, arrived at the cape on the evening of August 29th. When talking about his plans, it turned out that ‘Lennon’ was on a cycling trip along the Baltic Sea coast from south to north, and considering the continued southerly winds, that is likely how he will proceed.

The main topics of conversation are usually an introduction to the Põõsaspea migration counting project, showing the birds, and dropping some facts about the length of some migratory bird route or the counting numbers, to which the visitor initially falls silent in amazement and then says, ‘Well, good for you!’ On days with low migration, we’ve had the chance to give birding tourists a more detailed introduction to the migration graphics of various species and recommend the next birding places. On a couple of occasions, (Estonian) visitors have also asked about the Cormorants, and they have been satisfied and agreed with the viewpoint of an ornithologist.

Põõsaspeale pooleteiseks kuuks sättides oli vaim valmis ühiskonnast isoleeritud perioodiks, suhtlusoskuse ikaldumiseks. Üsna pea aga selgus, et lisaks lindude rände koondumispaigale on neem ka oluline inimrände koondumispaik, kusjuures ilmastiku mõju on analoogne. Seni oleme kohanud isendeid nii erinevatest Eesti otstest kui ka Saksamaalt, Suurbritanniast, Prantsusmaalt, Soomest, Lätist jm, Kõige haruldasemad isendid olid pärit Ameerika Ühendriikidest, kes saabusid peale tugevaid läänetuuli. Pea nädala kestnud lõunatuultega jõudis 29. augusti õhtul neemele Los Angelesest pärit John Lennoni moodi jalgrattur, kes on viimased aastad veetnud Lääne-Aafrikas. Oma plaanidest rääkides selgus, et “Lennonil” oli käsil jalgrattamatk mööda Baltimaade rannikut lõunast põhja suunas ja arvestades jätkuvaid lõunakaarte tuuli, siis ilmselt nii lähebki.

Vestlusteemaks on enamasti Põõsaspea rändeloenduse projekti tutvustus, lindude näitamine ja mõne rändeteekonna pikkust või loendusnumbreid puudutava fakti poetamine, mille peale külaline esmalt imestunult vaikib ja seejärel ütleb “Well, good for You!”. Vaiksematel rändepäevadel on linnuturistidele saadud põhjalikumalt tutvustada ka eri liikide rändegraafikuid ja soovitatud järgmisi peatuspaikasid. Paaril korral on (Eesti) külalised küsinud ka kormoranide temaatika kohta ning ornitoloogi vaatenurgast esitatud vastustega ollakse rahul ja suhtutakse mõistvalt.
