Waders on 18 August

31.08.2024

In the last count in 2019 there were only smaller numbers of large waders, as the winds were not favourable. This year, during the first half of August, the winds were fairly steady from southwest / west, which brings the waders down and close. In particular on 18 August and somewhat on the following day, there was a steady stream of waders close, at mid distance, or far away. Most of the flocks were mixed, showing black and red, with Grey Plover as the main species and smaller number of Bar-tailed Godwit, Knot and others. As we had good light almost all day, it was really enjoyable, despite some heat haze and larger distances. It was also a good possibility to try to get some pics, but getting the optimal shot turned out not to be so easy, as usual.

On 18 August the total for Grey Plover was 963, many times higher the previous one. We saw a total 16 different wader species including 310 Bar-tailed Godwits, 7 Turnstones, 72 Whimbrels, 42 Knot, 3 Little Stints, 6 Curlew Sandpipers and 83 Ringed Plovers.
