In the earlier project years, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019, the Põõsaspea migration project have started at the beginning of July. This year we had an extension from 21st June to the end of month in which we saw over 70,000 migrating birds of 90 species.
Some numbers:
Common Scoter Melanitta nigra – 55,441. The autumn migration of this species already starts
in June, but it is then somewhat more irregular than later.
Goldeneye Bucephala clangula – 4029. The autumn migration of this species starts in May, but it is quite good in late June.
Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus 159, usually the best numbers are in July.
Slavonian Grebe Podiceps auritus 10.
Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta 9 was much more than usual.
Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata 331. This was one of the target species of the June extension. Maybe fewer than we hoped for?
Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus 52
Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus 1850. This was another target species. We expected much more, but this species has not been doing well lately on the breeding grounds. Let see what happens in July.
Common Crossbill Loxia curvirostra and unidentified Crossbill. 372. There is some movement this year, but not very massive.
Other species on the move include Teal Anas crecca 420, Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula 436, Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator 1172, Grey Herons Ardea cinerea 246, Sandwich Tern Thalasseus sandivicensis 238, Little Gull Hydrocoloeus minutus 263 and Little Tern Sternula albifrons 10.
